To laugh or to cry?

If this doesn't just perfectly encapsulate the mainstream media's perfidy with respect to its coverage of politics in America, I don't know what does.

Also, this just seems wrong on so many levels. Who knew my dear old dad was convicted of a DUI in 1978? This is priceless: "Sentence Status: FINE & COST". I also enjoy: "Race: WHITE".

Pass the bottle something-else, please.

Quick Additional Thought re: FISA

To everyone who believes this is "one issue", as in, well "how can you drop support for Obama on just one issue". Respectfully, I think that is a narrow minded view. This FISA bill that passed touches on some of the absolute basic fundamentals that I believe one should look for in a candidate.

They are:

Respect for the Constitution.

Equal justice under the law.

Separation and balance of powers

Government transparency

Fighting Corporate/Lobbyist Influence

Government Accountability

Rejecting the Politics of Fear

FISA Bill passes; Somewhere, Nixon is going “what the fuck?!”

Sadly, yesterday the Democratic-led Senate voted 69-28 to pass the new FISA bill that increases the government's powers to spy on Americans without a warrant and grants retroactive immunity to the telcos for their involvement in the warrantless government spying that has been going on since, at least 2004. I say 'at least' because very few people, including the majority of the lawmakers who passed this bill know what they are granting immunity and for when. That's right - the Congress passed a bill granting immunity to telcos without even knowing what they were granting immunity for! Unbelievable.

Thoughts while drivin’ the hybrid - part 1

Does anyone actually prefer the kitchen garbage bag variety that does NOT have the built-in cinch or drawstring?

You know, like the kind you are supposed to either close and secure with a twist tie? Or the most offensive: the kind you are supposed to somehow magically tie one flap to another but the bag is always filled up past the point where flap tying is impossible and then you're faced with a Sophie's choice of digging garbage out of the bag in order to tie it up or just kind of half-ass your way to spinning it closed in a "as long as I can get it to the garbage can I'll be alright" gamble you really don't want to be taking?

Only 50 days until the US Open…

update: video I linked to is gone. oh well.

What a gem of a Wimbledon Final. Nadal beats Federer 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-7 (8-10), 9-7 in quite simply the best tennis match ever and probably the single greatest display of head-to-head competition I've ever had the pleasure to see. Just astounding.

I still can't condone the Capri pants though.

Special thanks to Bill Simmons for this timely Reverse Jinx.

And congrats to Spain! What a week!

We’re missing a huge chance here…(or how i learned to stop worrying and love Glenn Greenwald)

In political dialog these days, we keep arguing about what someone will do or what someone did say. I’m guilty too. That’s just the way we’ve been brought up in the modern American Presidential Election. And I think this is why it’s so hard for a sitting Senator to run and win a campaign for president. It’s only logical that it should be much harder to run a campaign that’s asking “We the People” to vote for what you are going to do when you are actually involved, real-time, and at the moment in our highest profile and most powerful Legislative Body.

What happened to the “Fierce Urgency of Now”?

I have been very and openly critical of Senator Obama and his apparent reversal on a number of issues that are very important to me. To recap, here are the top 5 hits:

FISA

Backpedalling on his pledge to use Public Financing

Extending faith-based initiatives

Throwing Gen. Clark under the bus and thereby joining in the complete hysteria

Supporting Blue Dogs over Progressives

I won't get into the details, merits and political manuevering of each of these now (the links above have covered these issues better than I ever could - though my hero does it best) but what has really been the most disturbing about it all - for me - is the way many of Sen. Obama's most ardent supporters are quick to dismiss any and all policy reversals and even have the cojones to suggest that being critical of Him is some kind of sacrilege;

Happy Birthday USA!

(and happy birthday to my new blog)

It really wasn't my masterplan to launch this puppy on the 4th of July but given that I've been thinking an awful lot about country and patriotism lately it does seem appropriate.

So. Hi. Allow me to introduce myself.

Now that that is out of the way some more vitals: ...
