Quick Additional Thought re: FISA
To everyone who believes this is “one issue”, as in, well “how can you drop support for Obama on just one issue”. Respectfully, I think that is a narrow minded view. This FISA bill that passed touches on some of the absolute basic fundamentals that I believe one should look for in a candidate.
They are:
- Respect for the Constitution.
- Equal justice under the law.
- Separation and balance of powers
- Government transparency
- Fighting Corporate/Lobbyist Influence
- Government Accountability
- Rejecting the Politics of Fear
This list of course are the broader themes and say nothing of the insidiousness of the powers granted to the president for warrant-less domestic and international surveillance.
I don’t know how people say all of this is “one thing”. Anyway wanted to explain a bit further to no one in particular. Of course this is my opinion and how I base my support for a candidate. I already conceded way back in the primary that both Obama and Clinton were much too conservative/centrist for me on most issues. What I loved about Obama though were his promises and speeches that assured me the seven points I outline above were at the core of his political philosophy. I won’t bother trying to show where and when he said this but if you are a firm Obama supporter, I’m sure you’ve heard the same speeches and read the same statements I have.
[...] For tonight’s homework, I ask that you read up on your Glenn Greenwald who has been spot on regarding these issues, and would also strongly encourage you to read my friend Alex Chiba’s post here about actions you can take now, as well as an updated post here. [...]
